The Government of India bought back some of its existing Government Securities (G-Secs) from investors through an auction conducted by the RBI.
Why does the government buy back bonds?
There can be several reasons:
- Debt management: The government can reduce or reorganize its outstanding debt.
- Manage future repayment obligations: Buying securities before maturity can help manage the government’s repayment schedule.
- Improve the maturity profile: The government can adjust when its debt will need to be repaid.
